Objective:
To use the time and distance annihilating properties of ICT’s in transforming the chalk and talk methods through pedagogical ICT integration to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Kenyan Schools.
Information and communication technology (ICT has) has tremendous potential to transform teaching and learning. Kenya’s classrooms will not change for the better simply by providing computers into them. Teacher buy-in, effective professional development, and a vision for the ways in which curriculum and instruction need to evolve in order to educate students for a rapidly changing world are all essential to such a transformation.
As part of teacher professional development within the framework of the Kenya eSchools program, Kenya ICT Trust Fund is already incorporating technology into the curriculum with the belief that:
- Technology should support student activities that would otherwise be difficult or impossible;
- Technology should be equitable and address all learning styles;
- Curriculum should be developed with the vast new set of digital content in mind. A demand based, rather than supply based, curriculum in which questions lead to discoveries leads to more questions. This has been very difficult in the past across varied disciplines but with simulations and online/offline group collaborations becoming more viable, demand based curriculum is becoming a reality.
The Kenya eSchools program is already providing ICT suites complete with digital content with clear student learning objectives, assessment strategies and interactive technology packages to:
Address individual learning styles and varied array of intelligences
Provide flexible and easily adjustable learning experiences to fit ability levels of learners Provide differentiated format for presentation and dissemination of content in various ways as like graphic, video, virtual reality, animations, simulations, audio, music, interactive and gaming elements;
Engage students through rich interactivity with instructors, peers and content.
Our Microsoft Partners -in –Learning (PiL) inspired Teacher Professional Development program, is based on the UNESCO- Competency Framework for Teachers .This pedagogical ICT integration program inspires, prepares, and equips teachers to:
- Design /plan research and activities for students including those with disabilities.
- Monitor and review student success as well as evaluate the reliability of various online and offline sources.
- Write edit and Publish for a genuine audience using a variety of tools.
- Mentor their peers using multimedia presentations to encourage local and global collaboration ensure spontaneous learning.
Kenya e-schools will be characterized as institutions that:
- Make learners who utilize ICTs to enhance learning through research and collaboration.
- Have qualified and competent leaders who use ICTs for planning, management and communication.
- Have qualified and competent teachers who use ICTs to enhance teaching and learning.
- Have learning environments that advance creativity, communication, collaboration and engagement
