At Hanham Hall in South Gloucestershire, the HCA has begun its first Carbon Challenge project. Working with a team led by Barratt Developments, we’re aiming to demonstrate to the housebuilding industry that it is possible to move towards zero carbon housing. By 2013, a new community of 186 homes, all meeting Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, will be built and a derelict former Grade II* listed hospital site will be brought back into use.
Hanham Hall was one of the most challenging briefs that we’ve ever had to deal with. It required Code Level 6, Building for Life, the Sipsee overheating standard, the CEEQUAL award. All of these meant that it was a great challenge for the design team. They had a very interesting site to deal with ‐ they had a listed building and some very nice landscape.
